Women in TechnologyI really wish I understood why so few women are attracted to jobs in Information Technologies. I mean, I have theories, but it's surprising for me that a field that has just about equal standing between men and women (women make within 2.8% of what their male counterparts make) has so few women involved (20%!). I think it has something to do with the number of computer games that target wom en, or it may be that women aren't being exposed to computers as a tool to do things that they are interested in. Regard less, as we enter the high tech world, those who know machines will have a serious advantage over those who do not, and a large percentage of the population is setting themselves up for problems. Unfortunatly, many of us in the Tech world a re doing little to try to bridge this gap. I mean, there have been movements, but very little is being done in the game design/killer app market to get people who traditionally don't use computers alot hooked. [I'm starting to sound like so me sort of pusher... hehehehe...]

Distributed Computing
Content Control
As various gr oups attempt to gain control over the vast amount of content that currently flows freely over the internet, we will star t to see more and more networks like gnutella. These distrubted, non-centrally organized networks will enable people to bypass the restrictive controls placed on them by a (their?) government. Of course, content based filtering and influx a nd eflux will always be there, but the introduction of encryption into these distributed networks will effectively block the ability of content based filterers to filter. The only trick is getting these systems wide spread and indespensible before content control groups manage to develop systems to lock everything down. Once we are in a state of total infomr aiton lockdown (or virtual lockdown) the process of breaking out will be much more difficult, and quite possibly more vi olent.
